SE-1647: Panel Discussion: Convergence of Application Lifecycle Management, Product Lifecycle Management, and Systems and Software Product Line Engineering

In the age of smarter products, systems engineering requires an increasingly complex amalgamation of hardware and software engineering on a product line portfolio of similar products with variations in features, finely tuned to support a spectrum of different customer stakeholders. As a result, systems engineers must cope with the exponential complexity of delivering multiple systems, with multiple variations in features and functions, through multiple lifecycle phases, synchronized across both the hardware and software development lifecycles, on multiple overlapping development streams targeting a rolling sequence of different delivery dates.

This panel brings together experts from the three systems engineering disciplines that contribute to the complexity challenge and that must ultimately collaborate to create converged solutions: Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) for hardware engineering, Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) for software engineering, and Systems and Software Product Line Engineering (PLE) for product lines.

Participants:
Dr. Charles Krueger, BigLever Software
Bola Rotibi, Creative Intellect Consulting
Rainer Ersch, Siemens
Marcos Novaes, IBM Corporation
Greg Gorman, IBM Rational

RDM-1659: Product Line Requirements Engineering at General Motors using IBM Rational DOORS, BigLever Gears, and IBM Rational Publishing Engine

Requirements engineering (RE) in the automotive industry has become significantly more complex with the introduction of hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles, because they dramatically increase product line variation in requirements.  GM recently launched its Next Generation Tools initiative, including powerful enhancements for this new RE challenge.

GM adopted an innovative combination of tools for complex product line RE:  (1) Rational DOORS for engineering a consolidated collection of common and varying product line requirements, (2) BigLever Gears for engineering feature-based variation points in DOORS requirements plus automated feature-based configuration of requirements for each particular product, and (3) Rational Publishing Engine to automatically translate Gears-configured requirements into different formats needed for downstream lifecycle standards.

This session offers insights and first-hand experience in the synergistic combination of DOORS, Gears and RPE for product line RE.

William Bolander and Doug Babcock, General Motors

SE-1669: Feature-Based Product Line Engineering Across the Lifecycle at General Motors

GM faces one of the most complex Systems and Software Product Line Engineering (PLE) challenges today: delivering a vast number of different vehicles and subsystems, with widely diverse variations in features, synchronized through multiple systems, software and hardware lifecycles phases, on multiple overlapping development streams targeting different delivery dates.

GM recently launched its Next Generation Tools initiative to tackle this complexity. One of the key innovations is to engineer and automatically assemble different vehicle configurations from a high-level bill-of-features rather than manual assembly of a low-level bill-of-materials.  This feature-based PLE solution is based on the BigLever Gears PLE lifecycle framework, plus PLE integrations for IBM Rational DOORS, Team Concert, Publishing Engine and Asset Manager.

This session offers pragmatic insights into PLE challenges and benefits, plus first-hand experiences from GM’s ongoing deployment of a feature-based PLE solution.

SE-1566: Product Line Engineering for Systems and Software

To be competitive, businesses today must deliver a product line – a portfolio of similar products or systems with variations in features and functions – rather than an individual product. Systems and Software Product Line Engineering (PLE) approaches have emerged to provide dramatic improvements in efficiency, delivery, scalability and quality.

IBM Rational and BigLever Software have joined forces to offer an end-to-end PLE solution that is fueling the widespread adoption of PLE. This innovative suite of tools and methods addresses the three essential dimensions of a PLE solution – multi-product, multi-phase, and multi-baseline – to overcome the complexity of delivering multiple systems, with multiple variations in features, through multiple lifecycles phases, on multiple overlapping development streams targeting different delivery dates.

This session offers the latest insights into PLE, plus first-hand experiences from successful large-scale PLE deployments on highly recognizable product lines engineered by Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, HomeAway, and General Motors.

Dr. Charles Krueger, BigLever Software
Greg Gorman, IBM Rational
